Alteration is also good for the armor spells, just keep in mind that the only real offensive spell you'll get is paralyze once you improve the skill to expert level, and even then you'll need another skill to actually damage enemies. Conjuration is really the only school of magic that you can really comfortably "main", since your summons scale up well and are even more effective at higher difficulties (due to the way player/npc difficulty modifiers work).

If you're going to go magic, either go with illusion (paired with other physical skills) or full conjuration. In Skyrim it seems like they forgot to buff magic after they removed spell crafting. Well, to be more specific destruction magic in Skyrim is incredibly weak in comparison to physical damage due to its lack of scaling and damage amplifiers (only potions vs potions, enchantments, sneak attack, and tempering for physical).
